Mobile phone records

Call detail records on a cellular phone are the smoking gun of so many affairs, this is one area that has a solution.  Another post talked about calling cards, and that can work well...especially the spoofcard solution you see all over this site.   (Spoofcard fakes the caller ID, not just on the handset but the phone bill as well, so if there are legitimate numbers that would call and not be suspicious, your lover can make it appear that these are the numbers calling you so much.  It's great really).

But for those with really frequent contact, phone card fees can get a bit high.  A better suggestion is to get a separate cell phone for this contact.  Usually, even the prepaid phones offered by the major carriers (and I know this to be true for Verizon) allow you unlimited calling to those in the carrier, so if you and your lover share the same network, there are no costs, apart from maybe a small monthly or daily fee to have the service.  Being prepaid, it's especially nice.  No bills to find / see!

The only trick is hiding the existence of the phone.  Use it for arranged calls and leave it off at all other times.   But then there are no traces.

Protect yourself.  Use spoofcard if you only talk occasionally, but for the ongoing affair...consider equiping yourself with alternate phone numbers.

I currently have Verizon service, but my spouse is pushing for me to switch to a shared plan under his service provider, AT&T.  Obviously, I'm avoiding it like the plague!  I text often with my boyfriend and do not want the other half having ownership/legal access to my phone/data records.  Does anyone have any advice other than obtaining a second cell phone?

Thanks in advance, and thanks so much for this website!

What's wrong with a second cell phone?  Rapidly capitulating to sharing the spouses plan will look good, like you are being very very open.  It's so easy to then hide in plain sight with the other line.

I've found that the second phone is much safer too, since when it's off...it's off, and no accidental call can come in when you should be at work but called in sick without the boyfriend knowing for example.

One neat thing I found is that at least one bluetooth headset (Jawbone prime) syncs up to two phones.  So now, with both of my phones on, I can make and take calls with the phone in the pocket and nobody has to know I even have the second phone.  I look totally normal.

Unfortunately, although I considered a second cell phone, the overall costs associated were prohibitive, and the logistics of using it seemed taxing as well.  I did some investigating on my own and learned that staying with Verizon was the only safe bet (see below), so I dutifully considered AT&T phones, narrowed my choices, and eventually found legitimate reasons why only one specific Verizon phone would suffice.  It also helped that the cost of each family plan was nearly the same.

Details for those of you with the same issue:
Verizon's online account service is perfect for keeping usage hidden when YOU are the primary account holder.  The primary account holder can view every subordinate account's usage detail, but secondary accounts can ONLY view their OWN usage detail for their own phone.  Furthermore, a secondary account holder still has enough access to be able to make payments but only being able to view the bill total.  Thus, no one else can view my texting and calling detail for my cell phone.  This, of course, will only work for you if you can make yourself the primary account holder; it worked for me since it was already my account.

Regarding AT&T:
The same does not hold true for AT&T.  My special friend has a family plan with AT&T, so I encouraged him to set up a secondary account for his spouse, thinking that the same would hold true and avoid any suspicions lest she get curious about his texting habits.  Unfortunately when he did so, the secondary account could access all of his (primary) usage details as well.  I've suggested he switch carriers, but alas, we disagree on the subject.  But that's an entirely different post...

Hope this helps!

Here's a topical article that speaks of the "bat phone," that second phone just for coordination of events that avoids the e-trail.  In light of the Tiger Woods scandal, this has all been revealed in ways that are dangerous for us all.  Laypeople now know what to look for.  If you don't use a separate phone, this is something I heartily recommend.
